The 2011 Plan

Red Fox doctrine insists there always be a plan.

Some years ago, I believe it was the fall of 2008, I drafted what was referred to as the "2011 Plan". The 2011 Plan called for a strategy shift away from marathons (ran Grandma's in 2007, Boston in 2008) and to instead focus all my attention on attacking my weakness; my speed. I would concentrate on lowering my PRs from 5k to 10 miles in the spring of 2009 and again in the spring of 2010. This, I executed with much pomp and circumstance. The fall of 2010 had me running Marine Corps Marathon, the spring of 2011 - Boston and the fall of 2011 - Chicago. Then I would retire in the autumn of 2011 at the age of 31...hence the 2011 Plan. Of course I wouldn't REALLY retire, but I would stop down on focusing so hard on running and essentially hang my flats up for good. Naturally this plan hasn't worked out as planned. This injury has mucked up everything. What started as a tweak in my hammy last July snowballed into a the biggest injury of my life. It's been almost 8 months and still there is no end in sight. It's been the longest war: the Vietnam of my running career. I have a super busy work travel schedule until May, but once Memorial Day hits, I am office bound until December. This potentially means I can craft a serious training schedule again (assuming I am actually healthy by then) and build upon that and move towards a new 2011 Plan. Instead of retiring this autumn my new goal is to be back in shape.

I ran 45 minutes this morning with Wiggy and the Predator. I felt good.
