Dark Days

I went out for an easy run yesterday. The combination of my fading cold and troublesome legs made for a cumbersome couple of miles. I felt good though and had no pains...that is until around 20 minutes. My left foot hit the pavement hard and I ended up walking part of the way home so that I didn't inflame the area more. I only got in 4 miles. The bad news, and the unfortunate headline, is I am still hurting; still injured (?). As I sit and type this dispatch, my leg seems to feel fine. I may opt for an easy run today close to home so that I can shut it down/off if I end up in pain. The problem is that I need to fine that thin line between resting and running. Time is ticking.

This "half injury" has evolved into a regular injury as it has now affected my running for more than one week. I seem to develop these issues whenever I lift my mileage up to uncharted territory, though I feel I am increasing the miles in a responsible way (ie - steady, not 30, 50, 100). Injuries come with the sport. I've been fortunate enough to have been injury free for about a year. I guess it's time I pay the fiddler. But the fiddler be damned...

Hang in there! After all injuries are only temporary! Trust me.

Jake,

No pain for the first 20 minutes of your run IS a good sign. And its smart you stopped immediately. I remember I kind of had to go through some bumps to really shake it out and run strong again. It is definitely a long distance injury, because the more time you run, the more the tendon is likely going to start bugging you at some point, because it is weakened, so you just have to not overdo it, but also strengthen the tendon as well. It's very much a balancing act, I think, and it's annoyingly delicate. Very frustrating I know, been there.

Thanks guys. The comments and suggestions are helpful as this type of injury is new to me.

I ran 25 minutes yesterday and I felt better (during and after) than I did the day before. I THINK I am going in the right direction, but the balancing act is frustrating. I'm about to head out the door now for another run. I will need to reevaluate my running strategy as I go into next week.

Sorry to hear about this. Just remember that pool running is your friend...and I know you know that. It's unbelievably boring, but if you're in there hammering every day and getting to work, then you're not going to miss much while the tender area repairs itself. The belt also may not be a bad idea if you plan to be there for more than an hour.
