iPods & Muskrats

On Friday I sat in bed, coffee in hand, and contemplated whether I would run or not. Did I need a day off or did I want a day off? Sometimes the two are intertwined deep within the psyche and it's hard to know what you truly want. The fact that I was even having this internal conversation meant I should run. The weather was cold and I got going quickly. I hit the hills around the Mormon Temple and gasped for air. I either felt out of shape or I was reeling from the effects of the too many holiday cocktail parties. I threw myself up hill after hill and after a few more of those, I regained my composure. My pace at the end was well under 6:00, but more importantly I felt strong and comfortable doing it.

Saturday also donned cold. I was set to run to the Chevy Chase Running Company from home so that I could pick-up and drive Emily's motorcar back to my place. Emily lent me her iPod, which I am unaccustomed too, and I hit the ground running -- hard. My first mile was a few ticks over 6:00, but I didn't look again. Again, I hit the hills hard. Western Ave was a true challenge, but it was great. I checked later and it turns out I was averaging close to 5:50 pace for those 9 miles. I've only worn an iPod a few times and it always has the same results. This seems fine when I'm not really training much, but it could be deadly later in the season.

On Sunday, after yet another - the third in a row - holiday fiesta, I ran 12 with Dave Wertz at Old Angler's Inn. We ran pretty easy. It was good we did. The bottom of my right foot was hurting some. Oh yeah, we saw a muskrat.

I got in 58 for the week.

Muskrat my ass. I'm the only one on this team who has ever seen a Muskrat. That's right, Karl.

Ask Dave Wertz. I told him too take a good look. Then I told him I would have animosity, but I thought it'd come from Karl. Never you...
