Eighteen Minutes

I ran 18 minutes this morning and all seemed fine. In fact, I would say today's run was BETTER than the run on Saturday. My legs still ached (from Saturday's run and/or from early Sunday morning's drunken race up an escalator going the wrong way), but this is all fine. I feel "fat" while running, which is ridiculous because I don't weigh any more than I did in the spring. If anything I feel more toned/cut, but whatever. I just need to regain my running legs and tick ahead.

During my run I saw the man who jogs every morning with his two yellow labs. I see him in rain snow and under the anvil of an August sun. Needless to say, they've become part of the scenery. Of course, it's been over 2 months since I've seen this trio. This time, however, he was only running with one dog. Knowing the other hadn't been doing so well earlier this summer, I asked how s/he was feeling. I was saddened to hear that the dog had to be put down due to cancer. I've been running past him and his dogs on Rock Creek Trail now for over 8 years and it occurred to me that 1. I've been running around these parts now for half my running life and 2. I've been out of the game now for a long time. I hope that lab is in doggy heaven.

I'm set for 3 miles on Wednesday.

Jake - I realize you and I had two completely different injuries, and we are two different athletes with different goals, but if you ever feel like rapping about getting back into things after the time off, you can always count on me.

I'm a friend, and a confidant.

And if you threw a party, and invited everyone you knew, you would see the biggest gift would be from me. And the card attached would read

Thank you for being a friend
