Back to Work

I had another good run on Tuesday afternoon. Hit some snowy trails and ran some good hills in the Parklawn Cemetery. My Achilles is still sore, but it's off and on. I am trying to take it easy and I think (or maybe I hope) the pain is dying away. Ran 7.5...14.5 for the day.

I started my new job today and had to run early...or simply when everyone else in the world runs. I headed out the door at 6:30am and ran my signature Walter Reed Annex run (see picture). Running this early sucks. I've been spoiled. Still plenty of snow on the ground this morning, so we postponed the workout until Thursday. Lots of melting today.

I’ve been reading the great Civil War masterpiece BATTLE CRY FOR FREEDOM for the past couple of months. The almost 900 page history has taken me even longer because my metro ride was only two stops (i.e. – 5-10 pages each way!). This meant for extra reading before bedtime. Anyways, a great book. I never knew rich Southern fanatics were funding expeditions to Central American countries in an effort to overthrow their governments to increase the Slave State vote in America. The stuff they DON’T teach you in history class! Obviously our country has come a long way in the past 150 years, but this book really makes that clear. The book quotes many an ignorant person.
Next up…AMERICAN LION (which I started today), the John Meacham bio on Andrew Jackson. John Meacham is the editor of Newsweek and wrote a fantastic book a few years ago on the relationship between Churchill and FDR. Great writer.

You are right, _Battle Cry of Freedom_ is a great book. An excellent one-volume history of the Civil War.

Check out McPherson's _For Cause and Comrades_ if you want a glimpse into what motivated soldiers on each side to fight.
