Water Run

I had a great workout in the pool today. I hate water running, but I swear it is almost better for your body than "regular" running. I "ran" for 45 minutes and did a number of "on" and "off"s which got progressively smoother, and progressively more difficult, as the workout went on. I never wear a belt so at times it is tough going, but I get more of a workout this way AND it works my upper body - something that definitely needs working. I got my heart rate up to 180-190 after some of the reps. I called Petey Towpath after and he confirmed this was around my max (Towpath is a heart rate guru). During my "off"s I was barely above the waterline gasping for oxygen. Once or twice, my mouth would dip under and I'd breath out of the nose like this fine looking fox in the picture above.

Hi, How do you water run? I've looked into a bit and tried it but without a belt what type of session do you do? Is it treading water without touching the water?

You need to be in an area over your head the entire time - sometimes a diving well works best. If you've never done it before, I'd suggest using a belt (basically a life jacket that fits around your waist). Near the end of the workout you should take the belt off and run without it.

But back to your question, it's not treading water. You're actually using a running motion in the water. Not swimming either. It takes a little practice and you look incredibly goofy but evenetually you get than hang of it (this is where the belt comes in handy). Lift your knees and drive with your arms - this keeps you both afloat and drives you ( "run") forward.

I think I'm going to have to have my attorney send you a cease and desist letter in regards to your use of the unauthorized "Petey Towpath" moniker.
